Freshman Orientation

Good afternoon, this is Chad Thompson, Principal of Henderson County High School. We would like to cordially invite all incoming freshman and their parents to come to the high school for a special event for freshman only.

Freshman orientation will be conducted for the Blue Unit Freshmen and parents on Tuesday July 24th, Green Unit Freshmen and parents on Tuesday, July 31st, and Red Unit Freshmen and parents on Wednesday, August 1st. All of these events will be held from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM in the cafeteria with the doors opening at 5:00 PM. If you have not registered online please do so prior to freshman orientation. You can find that information on the district web page. You will also be able to pay your fees of $50 Instructional Fee and $25 Technology fee this evening. Cash and check only accepted at the school or you can pay them online with a credit card through the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus.

Please enter the campus through the west entrance (closest to Arlington Drive) or the main entrance off of Zion road and park in the back parking lot behind the greenhouse or in the front of the building and proceed to the Cafe.

Colonel Home Blitz

In an attempt to increase face-to-face contact with parent's, Henderson County High School will conduct our Colonel Home Blitz for Seniors on July 24th, Juniors on July 25th, and Sophomores on July 26th. Advisory (PLT) teachers will be calling each parent to let you know the window of time on your student's class day that you can come to HCHS and meet with your student's advisory teacher and get your student's schedule. Parents and students will need to have completed the online registration, pay fees online through the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus with a credit card or in person with cash or check of $50 Instructional Fee and $25 Technology Fee, and meet with the advisory/PLT teacher to pick up their schedule on their designated date and time. Schedules will not be issued until online registration is complete, fees paid, and parents meet with advisory/PLT teachers. For a household not reached by phone for an appointment and for any family who misses their appointment, a home visit by school staff will be on Aug. 2nd but schedules will not be available until the first day of school. The Alternative Colonel Home Blitz will be Aug. 6th from 4-7PM. Teachers will not be available but once you fill out the online registration and pay all fees of $50 Instructional Fee and $25 Technology Fee, cash or check only at the school or credit card online through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, and you will receive your student's schedule. If you have not been contacted by July 23rd please call your child’s unit office to update contact information. Information about the online registration process is available on the Henderson County Schools website. HENDERSON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAM SUPPORT 2018-2019

The HCHS Athletic Season is about to start and we are asking for your support. Your support goes directly to the Athletic Program to benefit the student-athletes. 25% of your membership fee can be designated to the athletic team of your choice.

We encourage all parents of the current and past athletes, fans, coaches, local businesses, and all interested individuals to support HCHS Athletic Teams.

HCHS Athletic Program Support is available in 3 levels:

COLONEL LEVEL ($400.00)
4 reserved season football passes or 4 season passes to the sport of your choice.
Company or name announced at each home football game.
Company or family name listed in the sports program.

MAROON & WHITE LEVEL ($200.00)
2 reserved season football passes or 2 season passes to the sport of your choice.
Company or family name listed in the sports program.

FAN LEVEL ($20.00)
Company or family name listed in the sports program.

This is just a reminder that on line registration for the 18-19 school year is open for you to complete. Please make sure you take care of this as soon as possible. Your student will not receive their schedule prior to school starting if this has not been taken care of. HCHS Summer Construction and Parking Lot

Beginning May 23, 2018 until further notice:

Parking – West Side of Building (Arlington Street Side/Old Bus Lane) Please do not park in the roadway as this will be used as the Bus Lane for Summer School starting May 29th.
- Blue Unit Lot in the marked parking spaces only, please. This area will be used for pick-up & drop-off for student/athletic events.
- Red Unit Lot (behind the Green House) access via the roadway on West Side of Building.
- Stadium Lot.

Entrance/Exit – The Front Entrance Doors by the Blue Unit (A1).
- The South Entrance (C6) will be accessible until Tuesday, May 29th at which time it will be closed until further notice.
- The doors on the West Side of the building will be accessible with your key unless the custodial staff has closed them down due to waxing of floors.

There will be no accessibility to the building through the 600 Hallway, Band Hallway, Aux. Gym during the construction. Please adhere to the posted signs and barriers if an area is closed off. These are closed off for safety reasons as there will be work taking place on the roof and the moving of heavy machinery and equipment.

This is obviously going to be a change from previous summer months; however, they are working on much needed repairs to the building.

Incoming freshmen: English I and English I Advanced:
Read the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand. If you need a copy of the book there are still some located in the main office.
Assignment: Students are responsible for reading the book before August 8, 2018. The book can be found digitally on Google Classroom. Students must finish they study guide before August 8th when they will take the test over the novel. Students must also complete one of the project options which can be found on Google Classroom.

All sophomores/incoming freshmen with a middle school English I credit: English II and English II Advanced:
Read the novel Desert Dark by Sonja Stone.
Assignment: Students are responsible for reading the book and completing an online assignment that will be available on June 1st. Sign up for the assignment with Google Classroom code k3djmnp.
Use your school account user name and password for Google Classroom (not a personal Google account).

Advanced Placement Seminar (sophomores and juniors):
Read Think Like a Freak by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner and complete TED Talk analysis assignment in Google Classroom before August 8. Use Google Classroom class code 1cesqn.

English III (juniors): Read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
Complete the assignment found on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link; English II teachers also distributed copies to their classes in May. Books are available through the HCHS library, or you may get your own copy of the book. Students will complete an assessment over the novel within the first two weeks of class.

Advanced Placement English Language and Composition (juniors): Refer to the handout provided to you by your sophomore English teacher. Read The Scarlet Letter in its entirety. You will take a test on the second day of school that will count as bonus only. You will be assessed with the actual novel test during the second week of school. Assignment details can be found on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link or at the Henderson County Public Library.
You may also begin your independent reading/choice books for the year -- the first book will be assessed by the end of the first quarter. Choose one of the books from the list attached to the AP letter for your independent reading. You will be expected to choose and independently read one book for each quarter of the year. You will be assessed on the independent reading through individual tests and/or additional writing assignments or projects.

English IV (seniors):
Read “The Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales and two of the following four tales: “The Knight’s Tale,” “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” “The Pardoner’s Tale,” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.” Complete the study guide provided by your junior teacher. The study guide is also available on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link. The study guide should be completed before school begins. You will also complete a project and an assessment on your reading during the first weeks of school.

Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition (seniors):
Enroll in the Google Classroom summer reading course with the code provided on the letter received in your English III or AP English Language and Composition class. Read Thomas Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Complete the posts in Google Classroom. You will also be assessed on your reading during the first two weeks of school.

A close-up, professional picture of your son or daughter receiving their diploma can be ordered from Gray Photography. They will be available to view on Monday, May 21.

At the bottom of the website’s opening page, click on HCHS Graduation and Client Previews. When that page opens, put in the following password: HCHS.
Locate your child (they are in the order in which they received their diploma), select package and check out.

The proofs will be available to view and order on-line through June 20th. Should you miss the deadline and still wish to place an order, please contact the studio directly.
