2017 Summer Reading

Henderson County High School Summer Reading Information 2017-18: All Courses

Incoming freshmen: English I and English I Advanced:
Read the novel Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.
Assignment: Students are responsible for reading the book before August 10, 2017. Refer to the list of project choices on the school website. Projects will be due the first full week of school.

All sophomores/incoming freshmen with a middle school English I credit: English II and English II Advanced:
Read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Assignment: Students are responsible for reading the book (chapters 1-11) and completing study guide questions before the first day of school (August 9, 2017). Study questions will be collected on the first day of school. A comprehensive test over part one of the novel will be given within the first few days of school. Study guide questions were distributed in English I classes in May; extra copies are available on the school website.

Advanced Placement Seminar (sophomores and juniors):
Read Think Like a Freak by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner and complete TED Talk analysis assignment in Google Classroom before August 10. Use Google Classroom class code 58brav.
English III (juniors): Read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Complete the assignment found on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link; English II teachers also distributed copies to their classes in May. Books are available through the HCHS library, or you may get your own copy of the book. Students will complete an assessment over the novel within the first two weeks of class.

Advanced Placement English Language and Composition (juniors): Refer to the handout provided to you by your sophomore English teacher. Read The Scarlet Letter in its entirety. You will take a test on the second day of school that will count as bonus only. You will be assessed with the actual novel test during the second week of school. Assignment details can be found on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link or at the Henderson County Public Library.
You may also begin your independent reading/choice books for the year -- the first book will be assessed by the end of the first quarter. Choose one of the books from the list attached to the AP letter for your independent reading. You will be expected to choose and independently read one book for each quarter of the year. You will be assessed on the independent reading through individual tests and/or additional writing assignments or projects.

English IV (seniors):
Read “The Prologue” to The Canterbury Tales and two of the following four tales: “The Knight’s Tale,” “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” “The Pardoner’s Tale,” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.” Complete the assignment provided by your junior teacher. The assignment should be complete before school begins. You will also be assessed on your reading during the first month of school. The assignment is also available on the high school webpage “Summer Reading” link.

Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition (seniors): Enroll in the Google Classroom summer reading course (use your school computer username and eight digit password; class code = uwchpuh). Read Thomas Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Complete the posts in Google Classroom. Complete information available on the letter received in your English III or AP English Language and Composition class.

The Infinite Campus/Parent Portal provides parents/guardians with access to information such as attendance, grades, schedules, assignments, etc. This information available varies depending on grade level.
Online Registration Coming Soon for Henderson County Schools
We are excited to inform you that Online Registration for students in all Henderson County Schools will be implemented for the 2017-2018 school year.
Online registration will replace student enrollment forms and will be a quicker more efficient system for parents and the HCS staff.
We are asking for your help to prepare. It is important for parents/guardians to set up or update an Infinite Campus/Parent Portal account NOW to make the registration process easier and faster later. Infinite Campus Parent Portal link can be found on this webpage in the upper right corner under Quick Links.
Parents using Infinite Campus Parent Portal for the first time please contact your school secretary to get an Activation Key.
You may also request assistance with setting up a Parent Portal account at parent teacher conferences during the next few weeks.

$55 per camper ($95 for family of 2 - $125 for family of 3 or more)

Directions for Online Fee Payments
1. Parent logs on to Infinite Campus Parent Portal
2. Select Student
3. Click on Payments in the Index on the left hand side.
4. Enter the fee(s) to be paid and click Continue.
5. Enter Payment Information and click Continue.
6. Add Payment Information and Save
7. Confirm your Payment(s) – you can request a receipt to be emailed to you on this screen. If so, enter your email address.
8. Click Make Payment
